The Aquatics Division is proud to bring our community many options for education and recreation. Below you will find information about our upcoming Swim Lesson sessions and Lifeguard Training Programs!

Flippin' Fins Deep Water Aquacise
It's a cardio-based class but it's so Flippin' Fun! Using fins on your feet not only strengthens your leg and glute muscles but also your core muscles in your stomach and back. Participants must furnish their own fins. This is a minimum impact class so it's easy on your joints but make no mistake, you'll get a good workout! Minimal swimming ability is needed; floatation belts are available for rent ($1) or purchase ($25).

American Red Cross Junior Lifeguard Training!
For ages 11-14
Enrolled youth will learn in-water rescues, first aid and CPR skills, and how to use an AED. Students will work on increasing their swim stroke and treading endurance as well as surface dives in preparation for completing the pre-requisite skills of the full American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Junior Lifeguarding has it's own prerequisite skills:
a) Swim front crawl swim 25 yards, breathing to the front or the side
b) Swim Breaststroke 25 yards using the pull, breath, kick, glide sequence
c) Tread water for 60 seconds using the arms and legs.
d) Comfortably float on the back for 30 seconds or swim 25 yards of back crawl or backstroke.
e) Submerge and swim underwater 10 feet.
A youth hoping to take the Junior Lifeguarding course must complete these skills on January 2 or January 4 between the hours of 3:30 - 9pm. Pre-course testing should take 10-15 minutes per child

Class Times: 5-7 pm (during Public Swim Lessons)

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training 
A person who attends all classes and sufficiently completes all assigned work will be trained as an American Red Cross Lifeguard. Certification (after testing) includes Lifeguarding, CPR, AED, and First Aid. Adults, Seniors, College, and High School students are all welcome!

Course Pre-requisites: 300-yard swim, 2 minute treading test, 10-lb. brick removal from deep water. All prerequisite skills testing must be completed before the class begins. Please attend one of the scheduled skills testing dates or call to schedule a ~30 minute appointment.

Class Dates & Times: 
Friday January 19 9:00 am - 4:30 pm
Monday January 22 3:30 - 8:30 pm
Tuesday January 23 3:30 - 8:30 pm
Wednesday January 24 3:30 - 5:30 pm
Thursday January 25 3:30 - 8:30 pm

Approximately 20 hours of in-person class time are required to complete the course. Additionally, ~7 hours of online education will be completed independently by the student before and/or during the course.
 
Class Fees: $165 Non-Residents, $150 Residents Course fees are due after the pre-requisites are passed. Class participants that have applied for and are under consideration for employment as a lifeguard with the City of New London will have their class costs waived provided they sign a contract to work for 1 year. If employment is terminated by either party prior to fulfilling that commitment, full class fees will be due at that time.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Training 
This course trains a person to be safe in water environments and instructs the student to pass along the knowledge via swimming lessons and water safety presentations. Students will learn about and how to instruct others in the 6 commonly used swimming strokes. Also covered is swimming modifications for persons with disabilities, teaching adults, and teaching infants and young children. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) candidates are not required to be lifeguards and this class is open to ages 16 and older. Interested candidates should also have a rudimentary knowledge of the 6 strokes such that they can demonstrate (partially) one length of the pool. Butterfly for half the distance only. Candidates also need to be able to maintain or horizontal position on their back in the deep end for 1 minute and be able to tread water for 1 minute. Skills review with occur on the first day of class.
