Marking hammer from Hatten Lumber Co. raised on either end of hammer head "HL" for marking logs
VE Exhibit Label 1:
A stamp hammer was used to make end marks on lumber and logs. Like cattle brands, end marks and bark marks (cut with an ax), were symbols of identification and ownership. As such, the log marks were registered with the state. Loggers used marking hammers to tag the ends of the logs before sending them down the river. The initials HL marked logs for the Hatten Lumber Company.
