The Focus of New London Police Department

Vision:  We want New London to be the safest city in Wisconsin
Mission: To cause people in New London to be, and feel, safe.
Core Commodity:  The most important factor in our success is the amount of trust the community has in us.
Core Value: We believe in treating all people with dignity and respect.

The New London Police Department has a vision to become the "Safest City in Wisconsin."  How do we measure that?  By having a property crime rate that is lower than the state average, and lowest among comparable cities; by keeping violent crime, already rare in New London, virtually non-existent; and by clearing the crimes we do experience with swift and sure investigations  that lead to arrests and prosecutions.  We want New London to be remarkable for its lack of crime.

But we can't do that by ourselves.  Oh yes, we can improve our investigations, arrest more thieves, and practice good crime prevention.  But we can't do much to control the climate of crime in New London.  By "climate of crime" we mean the level of comfort a thief feels when stealing something.  Does he or she feel confident that they won't get caught?  Do they think witnesses won't care enough to call police?  Do they think others will protect them from arrest?  Or do they believe that the neighbor will call to report their wrongdoing?  Do they understand that witnesses will confront them or at least report them?  Do they sense that this community has very little tolerance for crime and disorder?

The climate of crime is primarily controlled by you, the citizen of New London.  Your response to crime, your intolerance of crime, your demand for prosecution of those who threaten our quality of life assures our low crime rate.

So our plan for the future must not just be about how to do better patrol, better investigation, and better documentation.  We have to understand how to help you control the climate of crime.  We are committed to partnering with you, empowering you, mobilizing resources for you, and learning from you to drive crime away and make New London the "Safest City in Wisconsin."
