Rectangular block of metamorphosed mudstone, fine grained, easliy carved. Red/tan due to the presence of iron oxides.
VE Exhibit Label 1:
Catlinite is also called pipestone. Because it is fine-grained and easily worked, it is prized by Native Americans, primarily those of the Plains nations for use in making ceremonial pipes.
