A type cluster, such at Plano Lanceolate, is a group of named types with overlapping characteristics. These characteristics include technological attributes of overall form, characteristics of manufacture, and resharpening processes. Because of this, types within a cluster often share the same time period, may represent part of an evolutionary trend or may be within the same cultural tradition or manufacturing technology.

There are several kinds of clusters. Most of the clusters are named for a well-known point type e.g. Plano Lanceolate. Such a name represents the basic form and suggests the kinds of characteristics embodied within the cluster.
