The compressed carbonized leaf pictured here comes from a deciduous, nut-bearing plant. Although this plant is a type of birch tree that lived during the Cretaceous Period, it has since gone extinct. However, because of its close relationship to modern birch trees, it is easy to determine the type of environment required for this plant to survive.
