Description:
Singular specimen of horned ammonite.
The Hell Creek is the only formation of appropriate age for the specimen in Custer County. However, it is a fluvial and flood plain deposit. Not a marine deposit. While it is possible this ammonite found it's way inland, it is highly unlikely.

Ammonites are an ancient cephalopod. They used the tentacles protruding from their shells to swim through ancient seas. While they likely resembled the modern Nautilus they are more closely related to squids and octopus. This particular specimen was collected in Montana and is at least 65 million years old.
