This coral fossil also has unknown origins but based on the corallites, or openings in the matrix, this coral was a type of colonial coral called favosites or honeycomb coral. Individual little coral polyps would live in the openings attached to tabulae, or little platforms within the structures, that they would build as they grew. They would reach out through the opening to feed from the ocean currents that would pass over the colony.
