VE Exhibit Label 1:
These shells belong to another type of sea snail that have existed since the Cretaceous Period, however the exact period is unknown, as there is no known geologic setting associated with these snails. Although this particular type of snail is extinct, other closely related turritellids still exist today. The shell opening and shell shape help to identify the various species and can help to identify in which environments these snails may have lived. Since their shells are long and conical, they can be fragile, so turbulent waters would not be ideal environments for these snails. They would have lived in shallow, gentle ocean waters, where sunlight could reach the sea floor.
