Coral fossils are unique in that they largely undergo little or no change between death and discovery. This particular specimen is commonly referred to as honeycomb or favosites coral. The openings run vertically through the coral with periodic thin horizontal layers referred to as tabulae. Many of the openings on this specimen have been filled in with sediment.
