VE Exhibit Label 1:
This is an example of a well preserved clam shell. Many seashells will look like they have original hard parts preserved but in reality they have had shell material replaced or recrystallized. Most shells are made with a mineral known as aragonite, which is very similiar to calcite, both are minerals with a lot of calcium. This is why it is very easy for these shells to be recrystallized into calcite once the shell begins to fossilize over time.
