This fossilized fish comes from a group of rocks in Wyoming known as the Green River Formation. The age of the rocks that make up this formation are from the Eocene Period and range in age from 34-56 million years in age. This area was a part of the Western Interior Seaway during the Cretaceous Period. This great inland sea began to subside during the Late Cretaceous Period and the Early Cenozoic Era, which is why marine fossils can be found in states like Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota.
