Description:
Single bivalve shell with well preserved hinge, teeth and muscle scars. Most other elements appear to have been eroded.

This clam shell appears to have its original material but in reality it has undergone recrystallization. The composition of the shell has changed during the fossilizaton process, making it appear to be as any other shell that might be found on the beach. Whether it is an extinct or extant, clams still exist today, making it easy for scientists to determine how and where they would have lived.
