These specimens are the internal molds of sea snails. Without having a shell to identify the specimens, it is difficult to identify the species but not impossible. Reviewing the shape and size of the spiral, as well as knowing where the specimens were found both geographically and geologically, can help scientists identify the species. This is how a lot of identification works for museum collections.
