One of the earliest and well known arthropods, trilobites resided on the sea floor for over 300 million years before dying out in the Permian Extinction that took place 252 million years ago.
Trilobites had three body segments, a cephalon, a thorax, and a pygidium, head, body, and tail respectively. This particular specimen has a thorax (body), and pygidium preserved.
