Gastropods, commonly referred to as snails have been around for over 500 million years. The specimens seen hear are preserved as internal molds. This occurs when a snail dies and is buried in soft sediment. After the snail's soft body decays the shell remains and becomes filled with sediment. Over time the sediment hardens into rock. The shell eventually dissolves away and leaves behind the rock in the shape of the inside of the shell.
